Lately, I’ve been on this literary high from a recent novel. I consumed the pages like decadent cheesecake, savoring every moment of its poetic language. The 2013 novel, Americanah, written by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been on my radar for quite some time. When I was gifted this book from my wishlist (thank you) I knew my time with this love story would be special.
I’ve been reflecting on the genres of literature that resonate with me, and while I enjoy a variety, I find myself particularly drawn to literary fiction.
So there’s a love story.
Boy meets girl. Girl blows his mind in that self-assured intellectual way. A move to America is presented to her, she leaves, and they both endure their share of hardships. Though the plot is good, the story is enhanced by Chimamanda’s ability to craft sentences that eloquently dance. She writes with this intimacy as we explore the characters and the culture. Here with this book is when I decided to begin tabbing1 with bright red sticky notes to bookmark so much of what I wanted to revisit.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book earns 4 out of 5 stars for its charming and captivating writing style along with its enlightening culture references.
A few pulled quotes that describe the book well:
“He made her like herself. With him, she was at ease; here skin felt as though it was the right size.”
“You can love without making love.”
“She was at war with the world and woke up each day feeling bruised.”
And word of the day:
“Cheating was the first thing anyone would think of with man like Don, with that lubricous aura of his.
